A Model Of A Martian Echinoderm Fossil

The solid model of Area ophiuroidea shultsiii

BACK

This model was sculpted in plasticine clay from the images on the previous page.  The details in this model are from many painstaking hours of image analysis and image stacking in an attempt to get the clearest possible idea of what this fossil looks like.

Compare this with other echinodermata such as ophiuroidea and see how well they match up.  Also compare these to the Sol 028 images and you will see excellent agreement between the model and the images.

Here is the original model with no enhancements or special lighting.  I modeled this using the enhanced images and also compared the features to those of various echinoderms.
This is the model with harsh lighting and misadjusted contrast and brightness, similar to many of the microscopic images.
And here is the model with deliberately soft and indistinct lighting, also similar to many of the microscopic images.  See how the features blur into rough outlines and lumps?  They precisely match those in the Opportunity images for this fossil.
