Detailed View - MER-B Sol 014 Object

The original NASA/JPL image link is here

Description:  sea biscuit

Apparent size: 3.5 mm

Common features:  star patterns, pentagons, and hexagons cover the surface of this organism

Stacked frames:  5

Enhancement methods:

bright/contrast  difference anti-shadow

After bright/contrast, five frames were stacked and the differential process done.  The resulting image had anti-shadow algorithm applied and then contrast enhanced again

Summary description of image contents:  an organism similar to a sand dollar, this is an excellent and detailed view of overlapping geometric patterns.  The five-fold symmetry and regular pentagons are not found in mineral crystals, and have only recently been synthesized in "quasi-crystals", after the work of Roger Penrose.  Biology is the only known non-man-made example of pentagonal structures in nature.
