Here are some of the components made to modify the alternator into a magneto style generator and the details of the mounting plate for the generator housing.  I also have a close up shot of the web that holds the bearings in place inside the turbine.

The device on the left is the end plate of the turbine.  The star shaped element is the web that contains the bearings.  It centers and mechanically stabilizes them so vibration will not wear the bearing seats.  Turbines with a little vibration can soon eat the bearing seat and destroy the bearings.  Early on as we experimented, we destroyed a few bearings learning exactly how to balance and adjust the turbine rotor.  It is not a task for the faint of heart.

The shaft in the center is the heart of the custom alternator rotor.  It duplicates the dimensions of the original alternator shaft and is the hub of the rotor.  It is steel mainly for the durability.  The two rings slide onto the shaft and are locked in place with set screws.  They will hold the HDPE discs that hold the magnets for the generator.

Getting the generator to mate with the turbine in a mechanically sound manner is not very hard.  You fabricate a plate that adapts the two into a single unit.  This plate was made by milling two blocks that matched the tabs on the generator and then welding them to a plate of aluminum.  Now the generator drops into place and is held by two bolts, just as it would be inside a vehicle.  The shaft will protrude through the hole in the center of the plate.

The mounting plate provides a way to install the turbogenerator as a single unit.  The only attachments then would be the live steam line for supplying the turbine, the return line to the radiator, and the power and ground wires from the generator.  Ground is by a physical attachment to the plate, which is also the system electrical ground.  The power terminal is the screw terminal on the other half of the generator housing, exactly as it would be in a vehicle.  This maintains simplicity so that nearly anyone can service the system with a minimum of expertise.
